Day 308 Monday, April 24, 2023
Halifax Harbor, Daytona to St. Augustine Municipal Marina, Florida
Today we left at 7:20am. We need to time our arrival in St. Augustine at slack tide due to the currents at the marina there. Along the way we passed Caribbean Jacks where we ate with friends last night. It was fun to see it from the waterfront.
Broadway Bridge US 92, Daytona
Today we would have to pay more attention to the bridges. The Atlantic Intercoastal Waterways (AICW) has many bridges that cross it. Depending on the height of your boat (air draft) you may have to have the bridge opened so that you can continue on. Some bridges have scheduled openings while others open upon request. Some are lift bridges while others are swing bridges. We missed a lot of required openings because we bypassed them on the AICW when we went to the Bahamas.
Watch dog. Watching the passing boats or guarding his property??
Our second bridge for the day was 22 foot so all we had to do was lower our antennas. The LB Knox Bridge was only 9 foot so we needed an opening. The bridge operator was super nice and must have to open for most boats going through. We only had a short wait even though we had just missed the last opening.
More derelict boats. At first we thought the boats were just rafted together.
We had a flat calm day with more manatees. We were passed by a beautiful 1958 wooden boat, Bernadette.
We are on the right! |
St. Augustine Municipal Marina did have a lot of current when we arrived. Thankfully we were given good instructions to our slip by the dockmaster and we had dockhands to help when we arrived. The dockmaster tells you to set your fenders and ready your lines and then directs you. Good plan to be ready before the current tries to take you. LOL. We were especially grateful; our slip was very narrow. Jerry did an awesome job, as usual.
Call Me Curly arrived a short bit after us. We walked the town with them and then did happy hour.
Oldest wooden schoolhouse |
Sharon and Grant invited us for a lovely dinner of salmon and Caesar salad.
Day 309 Tuesday, April 25, 2023
St. Augustine, Florida
We explored St. Augustine via the hop on hop off trolley. We enjoy the narrated tours and the chance to see areas of interest up close.
We took the entire ride and hopped off at the Old Jail. The jail doesn't look at all like a jail from the outside. It was often mistaken as a hotel with train passengers knocking on the front door in search of accommodations. Thomas Flaglar offered to build this new jail if he could move the jail location 1 mile away from his hotels. He felt the original jail was a detraction from his hotels.
Sheriff Big Joe Perry
St. Augustine is very historic and quaint. So many things to see. We would come back.
Dinner at Harry's Seafood was delicious. I had the Market Pasta with shrimp, chicken, spinach and bowtie pasta in a light cream sauce. Jerry had the shrimp and grits. We both had lefties. We finished our day with cards on Call Me Curly.
We spent the morning exploring the Castillo de San Marco. We got our Lifetime National Parks membership there, giving us free entrance into the national parks. The fort was built by the Spanish to defend Florida and their trade routes from the south. It is the oldest masonry fort in the United States. At one time it served as a jail and housed native Americans.
We spent our afternoon with friends Faye and Mike who moved to St. Augustine several years ago. They were excellent tour guides. We enjoyed a great visit, some entertainment, wine and charcuterie at St. George Inn Bin 39 and a tour of the coastline in Mike's convertible. So nice to catch up with old friends.
Tomorrow we move on to Jacksonville Florida.
