Day 361 - 363 June 16 - 18, 2023

Day 361 Friday, June 16, 2023

Higgins Yacht Yard, St Michaels, MD to Annapolis, MD

We were underway at 8:30 on our way to Annapolis.  We were met by vintage boats on their way to participate in the Father's Day events at Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.  The day was grey and the water a bit choppy, but not uncomfortable.  We did have a chance of thunderstorms that we hoped we could avoid.

1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse

We passed the remains of Bloody Point Bar Warning Lighthouse.  Dark clouds over Annapolis, we ran into rain and fog at 11:15, necessitating the use of our radar.  Weather eventually cleared but it remained very windy.

Our marina, Annapolis Yacht Basin, is near the heart of Annapolis.  Our slip was located right at the shore (convenient) but we had to wind our way through some narrow fairways to get to it.  Jerry did his usual great job getting us docked.  Our neighbor boat "Perseverance" had arrived shortly before us.  He was a retired Air Force Commander and was familiar with Plattsburgh!

Once settled we ventured into town and of course ended up with ice cream.  We've definitely sampled ice cream throughout our trip.

We had dinner back on the boat and discovered that the Yacht Club in front of us marked sunset with a canon and bugler.  What a nice treat.  It reminded us of times at Snug Harbor and taps played by Bob at sunset.

Day 362 Saturday, June 17, 2023

I tried to do laundry at the marina yesterday but it closed by 5pm.  We didn't get back from our walk until too late to have it finished in time.  Big plans for the day I got up early enough to do our laundry before our 10am tour of the US Naval Academy.

We met Sharon and Grant at the Alex Haley Kunta Kinta Monument and headed over to the Academy.   Janet was our guide for an electric golf cart tour of the Academy Campus.  I had no idea that it was so big.  We all decided to return tomorrow to spend more time in the museum and inside the buildings.

 Chapel

Tour finished, we met Arlene and Al from Arion at the end of "Ego Alley".   Ego Alley is a narrow stretch of water ending at the Alex Haley Statue where huge yachts cruise into town to show off .  Once they get to the end they need to demonstrate their skill turning their big boat around!

We met Al and Arlene back in September in Port Washington,  Wisconsin!  We traveled with Arion down the river systems to Mobile Alabama, across the Florida Panhandle and the infamous 36 hour crossing of the Gulf of Mexico to Clearwater.  We were together again a month in Stock Island, Key West before they headed back home to Maryland where they crossed their wake.  They cruised a couple hours to  join us in Annapolis!

It was a great reunion.  We watched a bit of the Juneteenth Parade and then headed to across the bridge to Eastport for lunch at Dockhouse.

Jerry and I had our FIRST Maryland crab cake.  It was delicious.  It was so nice to catch up with them.  Thanks so much Arlene and Al for coming to visit us!!

Day 363 Sunday, June 18, 2023  Happy Father's Day!

After mass at St. Mary's Church we headed back to the US Naval Academy.  This time we headed straight to the museum.

St. Mary's Church was beautiful inside.

I'm so glad that we went back to the Academy.  Yesterday's tour highlighted the campus and different buildings but more of an overview.  We went in the Naval Chapel and Museum this time.  So much to see, you can easily visit multiple times.  Among the other exhibits the museum is filled with model ships -- we found some donated by a man from Willsboro!

Who knew so many US Navel Academy Graduates became Astronauts!

Cadets are allowed to get married in the Chapel.  So many celebrations that they only get 1 hour.  A baptism took place the first day we were there.  Visiting the Chapel is limited during these events.

A long day, we had leftover Italian from Limoncello.  Tomorrow we head to Baltimore; we'll celebrate Father's Day properly there.
