Day 382 -387 July 7- 12, 2023

 Day 382 Friday, July 7, 2023

Statue of Liberty, New York City to Half Moon Bay, Croton-On-Hudson, NY

Today started out well - we had worried about the possibility of snagging our anchor on an under water cable but thankfully, no problem.  Just a lot of black muck to clean off.   Our anchorage was a bit rolly during the night but it was pretty cool to be behind the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

We were underway at 8:47am and enjoyed one more cruise beside Miss Liberty.  We made our way around multiple ferries and marveled at the number of helicopters flying above us.  We could still see the smoke from the cargo ship fire at Port Newark in New Jersey.   Thirty minutes in an engine started alarming.  All the gauges were good; we'd been through this before....  Jerry shut down the engine hoping that once he restarted it would be okay.  That had worked on our way to Key West.  No luck this time.  After several "rest periods" and restarts failed we traveled the rest of the day on one engine.  Call Me Curly graciously stuck with us.  Even on one engine and all the floating debris we managed 7.5 to 8 knots with the push from the tide!  We arrived at Half Moon Bay in 5 hours.

Along the way we passed:

Manhattan Skyline

The Colgate Clock

Highline Park

 Chelsea Pier golf range
The net structure on the left is the driving range.

 Too big for the Loop!

Aircraft Carrier Intrepid

Two Harbors passing in front of the Intrepid.

There was a dramatic scenery change when we reached the George Washington Bridge at 10:30.

The Hudson River is beautiful and welcoming;  it was what we had been missing over the last year.  We passed the New Jersey Palisades and reached the Tapanzee Bridge at 12:30.

We arrived at Half Moon Bay Marina at 1:45.   Jerry did an awesome docking on one engine -- Dockmaster Stephen and dockhand Sebastian were impressed.

Day 383 Saturday, July 8, 2023

We are off to NYC by train.  First, an Uber to the station and then a one hour trip on Metro North to Grand Central Station.

Once there we headed to TKS to purchase tickets for a Broadway Show.   We waited over an hour but scored tickets to the matinee -- Funny Girl, starring Lea Michele.  Good seats and half price!  Sharon and Grant chose Neil Diamond's A Beautiful Noise.

  Waiting in line at TKS

Time for lunch, we stopped at McCarthy's Pub and then off to our shows.

Funny Girl was AWESOME!!  The theater was full.

We joined Sharon and Grant at Oceana for a drink and then decided to do dinner at a favorite of ours, Carmine's.   We were on a 45 minute wait list for a table but managed a seat at the bar after about 10, thanks to Sharon's eagle eyes.  Carmine's serves family style; each entrée is enough for 2 with leftovers.   We shared a Caesar salad with Grant and Sharon (complete with anchovies) and chose the Yummy lasagna.  They had the Chicken Marsala.  We all had leftovers.

Back to Grand Central to catch our train.

Day 384 Sunday July 9, 2023

Back to NYC!

 Grand Central Station

Today would be a chance to sight see.  We hit Dunkin Donuts then onto a Top View Hop On-Hop Off Bus Tour.  We did the downtown tour first then stopped for lunch at Schnippers.  The 911 Memorial was a highlight.

Loved the building reflected in the windows of the other building.

Felt like you needed to duck so you wouldn't get hit by the traffic lights.

The uptown tour included a drive by Central Park.  We hopped off to take a walk around the park, checking out Strawberry Fields.

Back on the bus a short time later (to catch the last opportunity to ride) we snagged a seat just in time for it to downpour.  Sharon and I moved from our seats on top to the interior but Jerry and Grant had to stick it out in the rain as there weren't any seats left inside.  Good thing the tour bus offered ponchos.  We won't do a NYC tour bus again; the commentary wasn't synched with the tour and really lacked information.

We checked out  Playwright Celtic Pub and then dinner at Yard House.  We caught the 8:35 train back to the Croton-Harmon station.  Area flooding prevented the train from traveling on past our stop to Poughkeepsie; many travelers were stranded at our stop.

Driving under the Brooklyn Bridge.      Street view of Chelsea Pier Golf Range.

 Circus trapeze performers train here.

Day 385 Monday July 10, 2023

Today we had planned a trip to West Point but tours were cancelled due to the flooding.  Instead we hung around the boat.  Docktails were enjoyed with Call Me Curly, Hey Schlu! and new Loopers John and Mark (father and son) on Fast Pace.  Carmine leftovers for dinner, still yummy.  Major flooding was still occurring in New York and Vermont and was being called a 1,000 year rain.  We were concerned that our dinner at the Culinary Institute of America tomorrow would be cancelled too. Gary and Kathy were driving from home to join us for dinner.

Day 386 Tuesday, July 11, 2023

Our trip to CIA is a GO!  Gary and Kathy are on their way.  We spent the day cleaning the boat, getting ready for company.  When Kathy and Gary checked in the hotel clerk told them that the roads were so bad yesterday that they wouldn't be able to travel.  Lucky for us that was yesterday.

Gary drove the 6 of us to the CIA in Hyde Park for our 7:15 reservation in the American Bounty Restaurant, a 1hour 15minute drive.  They are such good sports to drive so far just to go to dinner!

Dinner was amazing!  We would definitely do this again.  For the appetizer I had the caramelized onion tart, Jerry had the peanut soup with pineapple.  Our dinner entrée -- Jerry and I each had the Fish Market special of scallops and red pepper confit with grilled asparagus.  For dessert I had a Phyllo napoleon with olive oil ice cream while Jerry had corn ice cream with blueberry and granola crumble.  Jerry's was better.  I know I said it already -- dinner was amazing.  Make reservations way ahead of time if you decide to go.  They also give tours (Wednesday, Friday and Saturday) and cooking classes.

Day 387 Wednesday, July 12, 2023

Sharon and Grant left today for Shadows Marina in Poughkeepsie.  We finally had an appointment with an engine tech to check out our engine alarm.  JR Boatworks was on hand to diagnose our problem as a faulty oil pressure switch.  All is good.  Tomorrow we will move on to meet Call Me Curly at Shadows Marina.
