Day 107 October 5, 2022

Day 107 Wednesday, October 5, 2022

Paducah, Kentucky

Oh, happy day!  I have been looking forward to our visit to The National Quilt Museum.  The Grand Wazoo, Tug Bussle (they arrived in Paducah late last night) and Eric's Inheritance enjoyed a yummy breakfast at Gold Rush Cafe and then headed to the quilt museum.

Quilter Esterita Austin first paints on parchment paper and transfers the image to organza with Mistyfuse.  She is able to create the appearance of pine needles resting on the vehicle.  She has done many different quilts in her "Rust to Dust" series.

Another must see in Paducah are the murals painted on the flood walls protecting the town from the river.  The murals tell the history of the area.  Visitors have access through wall openings to the river for fishing and enjoying the water.  Wall sections can be put back in place when flood threatens.

Paducah was known as the Atomic City in the 60's and 70's.  Paducah was the only strategic uranium enrichment plant and was used for atomic bomb production for the Department of Defense.

Back at the dock there are now 16 boats tied or rafting, even a canoe!  The canoeist is traversing the Illinois, Ohio and Tennessee Rivers.  He has a small solar panel and lithium battery to charge his phone and other devices (go-pro, etc.)  Most nights are spent in a tent on shore but tonight his mother was meeting him and he would be in a hotel.  I'm sure he was looking forward to a real meal, shower and a real bed!

We enjoyed docktails with La Vida, Tug Bussle, Call Me Curly, Table 6, Grand Wazoo and Forever Young.  Forever Young just started their loop a few days ago.

Dinner with Joe and Laura was at a local landmark, Doe's Eat Place.  Doe's is a chain restaurant that was originally established in 1941 in Greenville, Mississippi.  It was a store, then a honky-tonk that served food primarily for black customers.  Doe served steak to a local doctor out the back of the store.  Word spread and soon Doe started a restaurant in the year of the store.  Their reputation for steaks is well deserved.  Jerry and I shared a 1.5 pound rib eye steak with 2 sides each (salad and potato) and still brought a doggy bag home.  Very good.  Of course ice cream for desert at Forever Sweet Creamery!

Zoom in to see the water level at different flood years!

The pilings are high in anticipation of flooding.

Off to Green Turtle Bay tomorrow.
