Day 330 May 16 , 2023

Day 330 Tuesday, May 16, 2023

Georgetown South Carolina to Myrtle Beach MM403, South Carolina MM346

It was sunny and already warm at 7am, flat calm.  We passed shrimp boats at dock as we left Harborwalk Marina.

The water of the Wacamaw River is full of tannins making it very brown.  Tannins create the signature “mustache” you see on the bow of a boat.  So far we don’t have one but our cream colored hull is probably helping to mask it. It takes a bit of scrubbing to get it off; many boaters recommend lemon juice.

The scenery is lush, full of cypress trees.

Lots of nesting osprey.

We experienced a couple of firsts:   We came upon a school bus ferry crossing in front of us, transporting kids to the mainland for school.

We passed a gentleman on his porch with binoculars, he seemed to be enjoying the morning and checking out the boats as they passed by.  To our surprise we learned later that he videos passing boats and posts them on his Facebook page, “Show Us Your Boat”!  Sure enough our boat is posted there.  I messaged Mr. Carbonneau with our thanks.  Small world, he was born and raised in Champlain, NY!! Go to Facebook and check it out.

Not so new, a boater was warning others by VHS radio of the M/V Grateful waking everyone.   Even though we didn’t wake them we had a sail boater school us on how to do a slow pass.  Obviously they had a different technique to accomplish one.

We met a dredge in the dreaded, narrow, “rock pile” area.  Many rocks line each side of the channel; you need to be sure to stay in the middle to avoid them so it was a little scary when we had to move over for the dredge.

We had to request an opening at the Sockastee Swing Bridge since there was only 11 foot closed clearance.

 Lots of new house construction

Last bridge request before our marina – Little River Swing Bridge, then we had arrived.  Myrtle Beach Yacht Club is actually in North Myrtle Beach.

The marina is in a crowded “bay” area with a narrow entrance and shared by 2 others marinas.  The same boat that “taught” us how to slow pass had lots of difficulty docking in the marina……

Janine and Doug came to meet us.  What a great time visiting and then off to dinner with them at the Blue Drum.  Many plans were made for more fun with them the rest of the week!
