Day 235 - 242 February 10 - 17, 2023

Day 235 Friday, February 10, 2023

Stock Island

AIR CONDITIONING WORKED ALL NIGHT!!!!    We spent the day in Key West, this time with Susan, Danny and Clare, showing her the sights.

It isn't a visit to Key West without getting your picture taken at the "END" Route 1 sign.

Alas, it has been stolen again.

Clare also got to visit some of our favorite haunts, including Green Parrot, the Rum Distillery (yummy and refreshing Pina Coladas) and of course Better Than Sex Desserts Restaurant.  We also got to the piano bar - "The Little Jazz Club"

"Spred the Dub" was the featured band at Green Parrott --they were really good.

Day 236 Saturday, February 11, 2023

Spent the day enjoying the AC.  Jerry was enjoying the fact he didn't have any repairs to do!  Tomorrow was the Super Bowl and we are invited to join the other Loopers on Call Me Curly's boat to watch the game.  It is impressive that they can fit 12 people aboard comfortably.  I made croutons for the Caesar salad I was bringing.  Then to the beach.

Day 237 Sunday, February 12, 2023

Off to Basilica of St Mary Star of the Sea for church.  This morning we tried some quieter streets to bike there and discovered a small diner, Sandy's Café.  It had lines of patrons ordering and looked like a local favorite.  We checked it out and were not disappointed.  No inside dining, we were lucky enough to snag some stools at the outside counter.   Patrons place their order at the window and then wait for their name to be called.  First call is for your beverage, then 15 to 20 minutes later your food is ready.  It was impressive how many orders there were while we waited.  We also saw 2 delivery guys on their motorcycles leave and return a couple times while we were there.  Cuban food was their specialty.  We had very familiar breakfast fare but adventured with Cuban coffee -- a buchi.  Buchi is a dark roast, very concentrated brew like espresso.  I liked it.

Threatening rain, we finished our breakfast and headed for our weekly stop at Publix.  We needed to hurry as it was now threatening rain.  Gratefully we made it back without a drop.

What fun!  Lots of good food and excitement. Sharon set up a football pool based on the score at the end of each quarter.  Fun competition - 4 couples were rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs, the other 2 for Philadelphia Eagles.  It was great to watch such a close game.

Sharon was the ultimate hostess.  We had homemade sliders, dips, salsa, homemade pizza, fried chicken, mini pigs in the blanket, Caesar salad, cheese/crackers, and delicious apple bundt cake.   Loopers know how to party!

Day 238 Monday, February 13, 2023

The party's over -- time to do laundry.  This time at the marina!  Finally in operation after hurricane damage, there was 4 washers and dryers in a big clean space.  We played 5 Crowns on the porch with Arleen,  Al, and Susan while tending to the laundry.  Three loads done in record time!!

Day 239 Tuesday, February 14, 2023

It's Valentine's Day!!

Our original plans were to join 8 other Loopers for dinner at The Perry Hotel Resort and Marina.  Reservations were made 2 weeks ago in anticipation but just like Thanksgiving we decided to cancel.  While checking the menu yesterday we discovered that it was a fixed menu and would cost each couple upwards of $200 for dinner!  Easy decision for all.  Hogfish grill one more time.  Good food, laid back atmosphere and great company.  Lobster bisque and hogfish were excellent.

  Hogfish

After dinner we watched the sun set and a huge manatee in the harbor while being supervised by a "guard" dog chilling on his boat.

 Big lump on his back

Day 240 Wednesday, February 15, 2023

This was going to be our original departure date from Stock Island.  As we have learned, travel is dictated by the weather.  Not a bad place to sit a few more days.

Instead, Arleen and Al threw a party to celebrate crossing their wake!  They actually crossed back in Sarasota and might have celebrated there or when they get home to Maryland.  We are happy that we got to celebrate with them.  Bush Whackers and Blue Lagoon Margaritas were drank by all!

Rug hooked by Arleen Bush Whacker time!

Flying the Gold Burgee!

Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil ....have lots of fun!!  Just ask Jerry, Grant and Danny

Day 241 Thursday, February 16, 2023

Ocean's Edge shuttle with Susan and Danny to Key West to check out the Farmer's Market.  Olive bread, truffle and balsamic cheeses, spinach and artichoke dip to try, with a visit to The Key Lime Bakery.  The boys stayed at The Boat House and then the girls met them at Mallory Square to watch the sunset.

While waiting for the sun set.

Dinner at Bruscetta Francesca with complimentary bruschetta, salami and parmesan cheese.  We shared a salad and yummy lasagna. From there we went in search of music at The Green Parrot (none) and Captain Tony's (yes). Then we hurried back to the shuttle pick up.  We ended up taking a taxi back to the boat since the shuttle was full.

Day 242 Friday, February 17, 2023

  Peg, Arleen, Sharon and Susan

Danny, Jerry, Grant and Al

A sad day, we said goodbye to Arion once again.  They are headed to Marathon for a couple of weeks and then will start heading home.  It has been great traveling with with them.  We all gathered to help them off and then waved goodbye from "our" beach.
