Day 253 February 28, 2023

Day 253 Tuesday, February 28,2023

Bluewater Marina, North Bimini, Bahamas

Still pinching ourselves.  We made it to the Bahamas yesterday with a beautiful, uneventful crossing. Today we can start exploring.

 Eric's Inheritance in the marina.

It was fascinating to watch the freighter unload containers at the nearby Government Dock.  Everything must be shipped in.  That explains alot about the condition of the roads and houses.  There is a lot of poverty and neglect due to a lack of resources.

We started walking the very narrow streets, mostly lacking sidewalks, in search of The Dolphin House.  After walking about a mile it was time to ask directions. Unfortunately, I had been leading us in the wrong direction!!  A very nice lady sympathized with me and headed us back in the direction we came.  As it turns out our goal was only about a block from the marina....It was a nice, WARM, walk.

The Dolphin House is a house built entirely by hand from reclaimed, recycled and donated materials.  Ashley Saunders has built it over the last 30 years in honor of the dolphin.  Every room, every corner, is decorated or built with items from the sea. Shells, beer bottles, sea glass, marble tile and other donated items make up just some of what surrounds you.  Ashley conducts the tour himself, proud, humble and reverent.  In addition to be being a builder he is a published poet.

Current work space.
The shovel is plastered into the wall.  Ashley did that when he no longer needed it to build the house.  Building was done only with hand tools.  Now, his primary tool is a trowel.  Work continues on the third floor.  Eventually The Dolphin House will become an Air B&B.

Built in air conditioning.  Mayonnaise jars allow the breeze to come in. Just put the covers on if you are too cool!

Beacon of Hope for a cure to Covid.  This is on the roof of the Dolphin House.  The view is spectacular.

Next we ended up headed to the beach.  Just a short walk from the marina but watch for traffic!  Cars drive on the left side of the road; two lanes for traffic is often an exaggeration.   Small shops and restaurants dot the streets.  It was no different at the beach; we ate a nice lunch at CJ's with Anna Dee and Donna Lynn and then we enjoyed the beach.

We had company!  Lots of strays around.  We named this one Bimini.

Bimini adopted Corbin.  She enjoyed playing with a coconut in the surf.

Kalik is the local favorite.  I'm not a beer fan but this mango Radler is delicious.

Happy hour was enjoyed at the marina pool and then dinner at The Big Game Marina (2nd time for us). Yesterdays hamburgers cost $58! Today I had the Mahi Fingers appetizer that were very good, still about $40 with 2 drinks.   Our Buddy Boats will be moving on tomorrow but we are sticking around to join our friends Grant and Sharon on Call Me Curly.

Wi-Fi is intermittent so apologies for such delayed posts.
