Day 56 Monday August 15, 2022
De Tour Village to Mackinaw City, Michigan 6 hours travel time
Another beautiful travel day. No wind, no rain and no fog. Clear and sunny we had a bonus travel day. We traveled with The Grand Wazoo until we reached Mackinac Island. They are spending a couple of nights at a marina on the island while we are staying at Straits State Harbor in Mackinaw City. We plan to visit Mackinac Island tomorrow via the the Mackinac Island Ferry.
New for us -- we need to keep an eye out for net buoys, marking fishing nets. We also need to keep a look out for freighters again, they can really sneak up on you and generate a really big wake.
We saw a few lighthouses, parasails, freighters and quite a few ferries crossing to Mackinac Island. All the boat traffic in the Straits of Mackinac really keeps you on your toes and the boat rocking. Currently there are 7 loop boats at the Straits State Marina where are and 6 at the Mackinaw Municipal Marina. US Coast Guard Mackinaw is dry docked as a museum right next to our marina. It is an ice breaker.Check out the height of the breakwater!
Marina slip reservations in Michigan are done on line through the states Dept. of Natural Resources website. You can choose the location and see dates that are available. You can even choose your slip. It is a pretty simple process but requires some planning on our part. Reservations go fast in the more popular locations. We have had to make partial reservations and then watch for our additional dates to become available.
Lunch and a nap and invitation to loopers for dinner at The Hook Lakeside Grill right near the marina. Dinner and conversation was good with The Perch, Beyond, La Vida, Call Me Curly, Off Leash, and Eric's Inheritance.
Tomorrow we will head to Mackinac Island.
