Day 57 August 16, 2022

 Day 57 Tuesday August 16, 2022

Today's adventure is to visit Mackinac Island.  There are marinas available on the island but we chose to stay on the mainland.  It would have been more convenient but heard that your boat rocked all day due to the ferry traffic.  Straits State Harbor is newly renovated and behind 2 HUGE breakwaters.  We have only experienced minor rocking, primarily due to boats entering and leaving the marina.  It is centrally located and only a 10 minute walk to Shepler Ferries, our transportation to Mackinac Island.  The ferry ride was only 20 minutes to the island on Miss Margy.  She was equipped with triple 1410 plus horsepower motors!

We traveled under the Mackinaw Bridge, known as "The Mighty Mac".  The Mighty Mac is 5 miles long and 552 high.

Mackinac Island is famous for it's ban of motorized vehicles.  Transportation is primarily by bicycle and horses.  Deliveries are done by horse drawn carts and bicycle; policeman patrol on foot and bike.  For the tourist there is bike rental and horse drawn carriage tours available.  Pedestrians do NOT have the right of way, horses do.

We did a carriage tour around the island attractions.  Maddie our tour guide

 Handicapped accessible taxi.

We visited the livery stables with carriages owned by The Grand Hotel, the Arch Rock, and Fort Mackinac.

View from Arch Rock.

Ice Cream at The Grand Hotel and a visit to it's famous veranda.

The veranda is lined with rocking chairs for relaxing.

Back to town we checked out more of the town and had dinner.

We caught the 8:30 ferry back to Mackinaw City after a fun, but long day.  Our evening ended with surprise fireworks at the marina!
