Day 58 and 59 August 17 &18, 2022

 Day 58 Wednesday August 17, 2022

Mackinaw City, Michigan

Straits State Harbor has been a good place to stay.  It is centrally located to town with newer facilities. The weather has been sunny and pleasant.

Our day started with a bit of mechanics.  We had left the boat for Mackinac Island the day before knowing that we needed to refill the water tank.  We returned and found the water pump running -- hopefully it hadn't been running all day.  Tired we turned off the pump and would refill water in the AM.  Morning came and the pump wouldn't work at all.  UGH!  Did we burn it up?  Jerry prepared himself for the worst...he filled the water tank, hoping that the pump might need to prime.  No luck, the motor was running but no water coming from the faucet.  At least the pump works; could it be the diaphragm?  Real problem - the pump was air bound!  In just moments Jerry had it fixed.  So grateful that's all it was.

Today we toured downtown, very touristy.  Fudge sold everywhere.  We haven't indulged in any more since we were in Kagawong.  Wish we had bought the Maple Bacon flavor we saw there at the Farmer's Market!

We also checked out the Ship's store at Shepler's Marina.  Jerry found some hardware that we needed to replace and went to Dixie Saloon for lunch.

Tug Bussle arrived late afternoon and shared their adventures in Sault St. Marie.  There is an American and a Canadian Sault St. Marie -- referred to as the "Soos".  They took the Agawa Canyon Train 8 hour tour to check out the beauty of the Canadian Shield.  We shared our adventures on Mackinac Island, their adventure destination tomorrow.

Day 59 Thursday August 18, 2022

More Mackinaw City

Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse was established in 1889 and was a working lighthouse until 1957.  It is unique because it is located in the city of Mackinaw and not isolated on an island or in a deserted area, making it a desirable assignment.

Old Mackinac Point Light had a light and a fog horn.

Example of a Fresnel lens and the stairs up to the light!

View of the bridge from the lighthouse grounds.

The lighthouse became unnecessary with the completion of the Mackinac Bridge.  The lights on the bridge now guide boats through the Straits of Mackinac. We were able to tour the lighthouse, climb to the top and get a sense of the life of a lighthouse keeper.

We rewarded ourselves for our walk to the Lighthouse with waffle cones of homemade ice cream at Sweet Spot.

Captains meeting with Tug Bussle and The Great Wazoo, sharing the highlights of everyone's day and decision on a 7am departure.

Early start for a planned long travel day to Petoskey.
