Day 53 August 12, 2022

 Day 53 Friday August 12, 2022

Gore Bay to Meldrum Bay, Ontario

Off the docks at 8am with Joe and Laura of The Grand Wazoo.  What a difference a day makes!

The Grand Wazoo, a 45ft North Pacific

Sunny, seas relatively calm.  We are headed to Meldrum Bay only 4 ½ hours away, about 32 miles.  The marina doesn’t have much to offer.  No restaurants or attractions but has 100ft long docks with power and water.  It will be easy to dock and is protected from most winds.

Believe it or not there is a Decelles Island on the North Channel of Lake Huron!  Jerry is waving as we pass by the family island.

The cruise was pleasant.  I spent the time reading about Lake Michigan and potential towns to visit.  Travel will definitely be impacted by wind.  We have been told not to travel whenever the wind direction has a “W” in it.  Boats traveling on the east side of Lake Michigan are impacted by the “fetch” created as the wind pushes the water across to the east side.  Both coasts have some great stops so we need to do our homework.  We are sure to visit some on both the Michigan and Wisconsin side, the decision is when to cross over.

When we arrive in Meldrum Bay we are the only transient boats.  The water is an amazing green and so clear you can see the rocks on the bottom.  We ate lunch and then walked to the marina office to register.  The dockmaster, John, is a very nice man.  We signed in – the last boaters to sign in were 2 days before… It really is going be quiet.

Jerry spent the afternoon washing the decks of the boat.  It was really dirty from our travel in the Canals and locks.  It looks so much better.  By the time he was done 7 more boats had arrived and 2 anchored in the bay.  Now there are 4 Loop boats – Phil-N-Wild, Escape, The Grand Wazoo and us.

Another Purvis fishing boat.  Fish is always fresh.

Docktails were held and shared by a Canadian couple on a biking and camping vacation.  They were very interested in the Great Loop and our travels so far.

Tomorrow we head to De Tour, Michigan.  Back to the USA!
